The Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory focuses more on situational factors than on an individual’s preferred orientation. Placing more emphasis on the maturity level of followers as it relates to their ability and willingness to accomplish tasks, it requires leaders to be flexible in their leadership style to be successful. The Hersey-Blanchard situational leadership theory suggests that there is a fifth type of leader: one that can adapt their style based on the situation that they encounter. In some situations, they may need to have a telling style. In others, they may need to be a participating leader. In the 1970s Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard developed their Situational Leadership Theory.

The Hersey Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory promotes flexible leaders that are able to match their style to the experience and ability of those they are leading. Most people would agree that a good leader is a flexible one, and this theory falls right in line with that manner of thinking.
